31 October - 6 November 2011

There are many reasons why autumn is my favorite season, not the least of which is that we get another hour of sleep when we go off Daylight Savings Time. Next Sunday morning (6 November) it's an extra hour to snooze.

This Week at the Center School

The Regular Stuff
Homework Club meets after school Tuesday and Thursday.
Coffee with Ms Britsova Friday 10 am at the Center House Starbucks

3, 2, 1, -- Launch!
The Seattle Public Schools have undertaken an across-the-district website redesign, and the Center School's part of the project is going live on Tuesday 1 November. This district-hosted site will be linked with all other Seattle schools, as well as the district's web content, which will make connecting to district-wide online resources an easier task. It's a great compliment to our CSCA-run, Center School-centric website. The new SPS/Center url is http://centerhs.seattleschools.org/ -- bookmark it and take a look.

Of Course You Can Dance
Student teachers from Cornish College of the Arts are offering a set of classes for Center School students, Thursday 3 November and Tuesday 8 November. They run 8:30-10:30 am, so interested students will have to negotiate with their morning teachers. These are open to absolute beginners and should be big fun (not to mention eligible for PE hours!) For more information, look at Cornish Dance Flyer.

Do-Overs
Don't think your school picture looks like you? Photo re-takes are available on Friday 4 November, 8:30-11 am. Bring the photo package with you -- if you want a new school ID, there will be a $5 charge.

Heads-Up to Artists of All Kinds
The Center School will be hosting the state PTSA "Reflections" project in early December, a competition designed to recognize student artists. All students are eligible to participate, in visual or performing arts, but the guidelines for work are fairly specific -- if you're interested, take a look at their website: Reflections

Outside the Center School

Money From the Top Down
Federal education policies affect school funding all the way down to the building level -- the League of Women Voters and (Community and Parents for Public Schools (CPPS) are co-sponsoring an event to examine the current state of affairs and what we might do to improve it. SPS Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield and Washington Superintendent Randy Dorn are among the speakers Tuesday 1 November at Town Hall (119-8th Ave.) at 7 pm.

A Conversation with Steven Brill
Journalist, author and entrepreneur Steven Brill will talk about his recent book -- "Class Warfare: Inside the Fight to Fix America's Schools" -- and moderate a panel discussion with local education stakeholders. Tuesday 1 November, 7 pm, Central Library, 1000-4th Ave.

Diversity for Dinner
The Seattle Public Schools' Health Intervention Office, Office of School Family Partnerships, and Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield invite you to join lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families and friends for dinner and conversation at NOVA/SBOC-World School (formerly Meany Middle School, 300-20th AVe E) on Thursday 3 November, 6-8 pm. SPS hosts this annual event to support the diverse communities that come together in our schools, and to offer everyone a chance to share a meal and their stories. There will be activities for younger children as well as opportunities to talk with school board members and other district staff. This has always been a popular event. so please RSVP by November 1 with Lisa Love at 206-252-0983 or LLove@seattleschools.org to make sure they save you a seat! For more information, look here

Global Dance Party
Seattle Theater Group, sponsors of the fabulous youth program "DANCE This..." are using all those connections to present an evening of local dancers, from A for African to Z for (jaz)Z. Friday 4 November at the Moore Theater -- check the website for details.  Global Dance Party

Not the Usual Job Interview
The Seattle School Board is looking for input on the superintendent's position -- they are trying to decide if they should offer the position outright to Interim Superintendent or whether they should open up a national search. Come to one of their community meetings to share your comments on the question. Monday 14 November, Roosevelt High School; Tuesday 15 November, Denny International Middle School; Thursday 17 November 17. All meetings are at 7 pm. Childcare and light snacks will be available starting at 6:30 pm at all locations. For interpretation services please email barbara@seattlecouncilptsa.org or call (206)364-7430.

Beyond High School

One Last Reminder
The NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) National College Fair is this coming weekend, Friday 4 November, 9 am - noon, and Saturday 5 November, noon - 4 pm. If you've never been, you should consider going, even if you already know where you want to go after high school -- it's a jumbo-sized experience.

Last, But Not Least

Boo!
I don't know that it's really a scary idea, but apparently the world population is scheduled to hit 7 billion on Halloween. Still not as many people as McDonald's hamburgers ever sold, though.
