5-11 December 2011

For those of you who were not raised in Seattle, back before the first economic mess in the 1970s (when the billboards asked the last person in town to turn out the lights before they left), all three of the television towers on the top of Queen Anne Hill had holiday lights on them. Now it's only the KING-TV tower that gets the big treatment, but I'm still a sucker for twinkly decorations. In that spirit, let me know where in town you like to go to look at holiday lights, and I'll pass it along through the Blast. In the meantime, there's a movement afoot to switch ski bus nights from Wednesdays to Fridays (see message below). If this sounds like a good idea, let Julie Vergeront know by this Friday.

Center School Ski Bus-Is Friday Better?
We don't have enough kids for the ski bus on Wednesday nights, and are testing the waters to see if Friday is better for more kids. The ski bus would go on Fridays for 6 weeks beginning 13 January, leaving at 3:30 pm and returning at 10:30-11:00 pm. Bus only: $150; Bus and lift ticket: $330. Rentals are available for an additional cost. Please email me by 9 December if your student is interested in the ski bus on Friday. Julie Vergeront, jvergeront@yahoo.com, 206-459-1862.

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

Annual Fund Campaign
from the CSCA
Thank you very much to the families who have contributed to the ongoing Annual Fund campaign! Your continued financial support enables the Center School Community Association to purchase important classroom supplies, tutors at the after-school homework club, computer software, and Advanced Placement Biology.

Tell The School Board What You Think
The School Board has developed a public opinion survey about the direction of the District and the traits that people want to have in a permanent Superintendent. The Board is interested in gathering feedback from both staff and families in the district. The survey can be found here. Translated versions can be found on the Board's homepage. This survey will end the week of 5 December.

Theater Night Planning
from Kymberlee della Luce
Please join the Center School Community Association in planning this year's "Night Out at the Theater". The purpose of this event is to celebrate the arts together in community so come to the meeting and let us know what, when, how and where you would like to celebrate. Students, staff and parents are all invited Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00 pm at Uptown Espresso in Belltown at 4th and Wall. If you can't come but want to share ideas or if you have questions, please contact Kymberlee at 206-931-7307 or kymberlee@kymberleedellaluce.com. Hope to see you there!

Seven Keys to Baldpate
from Molly Pritchard, Director
The Center School Drama III production class presents Seven Keys to Baldpate, by George M. Cohan. Seven Keys to Baldpate is a melodrama-thriller of the roaring twenties, full of double-crossing dames, crooked politicians, raving lunatics and no-good thugs, as well as a dime-store novelist trying to capture them all in print. It's an action-packed, high style drama complete with shots in the night, false identities, ghostly visitations, murder and love at first sight. Public performances of Seven Keys to Baldpate will take place on Monday 12 December and Tuesday 13 December at 7:30 pm in the Center House Theater on the lowest level of the Center House. Admission is free!

A Few Good Desserts
Still need a few more volunteers for December 16 Staff Appreciation Lunch. If you can help set-up, clean-up, or drop off (a dessert) on Friday 16 December for the staff appreciation lunch, please contact Peggy Morgan at Pmorganxyz@comcast.net .

CSCA December Meeting
from Sam Star, CSCA president and all-around nice guy
The Center School Community Association is meeting on Tuesday 13 December from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the school. All are welcome to attend. This a great time hear about what's going in at school from Ms. Britsova. If you have something you would like to place on the agenda, please contact Sam Star, CSCA president at: president@csca.thecenterschool.net

Help Wanted!
Jodi Itman is coordinating the upcoming Senior Alumni Brunch (Wednesday 4 January), a chance for Center School alums to share their experiences with current students and faculty. She's looking for help with preparation and clean-up, as well as donations of food, drink and supplies. The Brunch is a great chance to hear "what happens next" with Center grads, and a nice way to get back to business after the hullabaloo of the winter holidays. Call (206-353-7726) or email (mamacloud@gmail.com) Jodi if you can lend a hand or two.

A Different Kind of Climate Research
The Seattle School District is looking for staff and unpaid volunteers to serve on their newly inaugurated Positive Climate and Discipline Advisory Committee. The committee will advise the district on creating a school climate and discipline management system that "enhances learning, equity, self-discipline, school attendance and connectedness while ensuring a safe, civil and positive learning environment." Meetings will be monthly, or more frequent during a start-up period or to address special issues, and the first meeting will be Tuesday 24 January, 4-6 pm at the Stanford Center Auditorium (2445-3rd Ave. S.) Interested individuals should submit background information and reasons for their interest via email to: jodingfield@seattleschools.org no later than Friday 30 December. Selection and notification of advisory committee members will occur no later than 6 January.

Outside the Center School

Share Some Help for the Holidays
Janet Gryczan's Center School family is adopting a family through the Broadview shelter that's making the transition from shelter to independent housing. Like many families in that situation, they had to leave almost everything behind, so they truly are starting from scratch, and have a big list of "needs." If you and your family have some extra resources to share, please consider joining in on this project. The list is here -- if you'd like to contribute, contact Janet at jegryczan@msn.com, 206-784-1392, or 206-351-0627. You can either send your items to school with your child, or deliver them yourself to the project at 8760 Greenwood Avenue N, southeast corner of 90th and Greenwood, ground floor of a condo building. Either way, do contact Janet so she can help keep track of what's been contributed and what needs to be picked up from school. The donation deadline for this project is 19 December.

Last, But Not Least

Many families chose the Center School because of our arts inclusion curriculum -- who knew it was such a controversial choice?
