28 December 2011 Greetings from the land of cookies -- I hope you are in the middle of many celebrations. Here are a few housekeeping items, and a reminder to do something this week that you can't manage during the regular school year. And if you have a message for the Center School community, send it along. Comments, questions, etc? Just ask... sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 And More... What Happens Next A reminder that the annual Senior Alumni Brunch is this coming Wednesday 4 January. If you've signed on to work, or to donate something tasty, you know what to do. Otherwise, if you'd like to stick your head in the door and hear some alumni stories, the event starts at school at 9:35. For more information, contact Jodi Itman at 206-353-7726 or mamacloud@gmail.com. News From the Big Boss, and the Other Big Boss The Puget Sound Business Journal recently published a Q/A session with Seattle School Board president (and representative for the district including the Center School) Michael deBell. And alongside that, deBell, Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield and state representative Revuen Carlyle will all be speaking at 7:30 pm Thursday 5 January, at Coe Elementary (2424-7th Ave. W). Portfolio Day If you're thinking of applying to art school, here's a chance for feedback on your artwork. Portfolio Day is a free review of your work by people who know what admissions departments are looking for in visual arts/design. Cornish College of the Arts is hosting the Seattle-area event on Saturday 7 January -- for more information take a look here. The Other College Bowl The YMCA is sponsoring a series of free help sessions for families working on the FAFSA application. Check here for more general information, and here for a schedule of local events. And don't forget a couple of #2 pencils. Don't Say It Unless You Mean It If the New Yorker is right, no one on the internet knows if you're a dog, but they do know what kind of kibble you buy. Education Week recently wrote about college admissions staff looking at applicants' online activity. Global Teen Program A personal note -- when I was 15 I spent the summer in Kobe, Japan on a cultural exchange through the YMCA. The program has changed since then, but the opportunity to be a part of a larger world is still transformational. The Seattle Y is a sponsor of the Global Teen program, with projects in Columbia, Japan, Korea, Senegal and Taiwan. Applications for summer 2012 are available now -- check it out here Do you have an idea for a BLAST article? We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week. Things we like to know: - School News, in and out of the building - Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc) - Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school. - And the ever-favorite "misc." By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run. To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net.
