30 January - 5 February 2012 Last week was the annual count of homeless people in the city of Seattle. The number is still too high -- it will be too high as long as one person who wants to find a place to live is still out in the cold. It's easy to be generous at the holidays, when all kinds of things remind us to follow our best impulses. It's harder to do that now, while we're still settling up bills and sorting through tax documents. But if every time we go to the store, we pick up a couple extra cans of something, and slip them into the food bank bin on the way out the door, it would be a help. sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 Center School Connections The Center School - Center School Center School Community Association (aka PTSA) - CSCA Facebook - Center School on Facebook CSCA Meeting Minutes - CSCA Minutes Center School Wish List - Wish List Report Volunteer Hours - tcshours@yahoo.com Remember, to unsubscribe to this newsletter, click on the link at the bottom of the page to get to the CSCA website. No verse from me this time, just a reminder. Center School Poetry Slam Monday 30 January 7 pm at Richard Hugo House (1634-11th Ave.) Winter Ball -- A Black and White Affair A reminder, for those who want to take their fancy pants for a spin, this weekend is the Center School Winter Ball, Saturday 4 February, 8-11:30 pm, at the Vera Project. Tickets are $12 in advance (and since they're $15 at the door, it's worth your while to plan ahead). This is a fundraiser for the junior class, and organizers are looking for donations of tasty food and drink (can be left at the front desk by Friday) For more information, contact Eva Cosgrove at evacosgrove@hotmail.com. Order your Dragonwear now! This year's dragonwear is ready for orders. Student designed and student sold with proceeds going to the senior class. Senior parents, please take an active role in encouraging and assisting your students get pledges. Spring CSCA Fundraising from Liz Wolk The CSCA is kicking off its spring event, the WareHouse Party and we need folks to help with the planning. The WareHouse Party is an evening when the adult Center community can get together and celebrate The Center School. No tickets required and food and drink is provided. This year we will add a small silent auction to help reach our funding goal. If you are interesting in helping with this event or any fundraising, please follow the link to the following survey. And stay tuned for more information about the Warehouse Party coming this spring! Outside the Center School 826 Seattle -- Not Just For Students Anymore The award-winning group that offers such fabulous writing workshops for students (did you see the photo of director Terry Hein with Michelle Obama?) is offering another of their ongoing "Parent Advisory Group" programs, Thursday 9 February, 6-7:30 pm, at the 826 space (8414 Greenwood Ave. N). The guest speaker will be Mia Doces from the Committee for Children speaking about bullying behaviors in school, but mostly it's a chance to meet the 826 staff and other interested parents in a relaxed (read: potluck) setting. To RSVP, or to ask questions, contact Alicia Craven at alicia@826seattle.org or 206-725-2625. No Bias At All, Really Of course you'll be going to the opening round of the EMP's Sound Off Battle of the Bands to support all the musicians participating -- the fact that the Unibroz are performing in the 11 February event, and that they're stacked with current and former Center School students (Sam Wolk, Peter Durning, Fergus Farley, Moses Goldfarb and Glenn Zieve) is just a coincidence, right? Check out the website for more information. Really Big Singing If your student has a big voice and likes to use it, check out the Midwinter Break Opera Camp, organized by the Seattle Opera for grades 7-12, . For more information, contact Barbara Jamison at Barbara.Jamison@seattleopera.org, or 206-676-5564. Last, But Not Least My family is contemplating moving, but not like this. A classic moment from film history.
