1 February 2012 It feels a little odd to be starting a new semester in the middle of the week, but there we are. Alongside all the business below, make sure you keep your eyes open for the groundhog's shadow tomorrow -- you can even follow along online, if you want to mix old school superstition with new technology. Comments, questions, etc? Just ask... sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 And More... New Semester = New Schedules Homework Club is shifting its schedule for the spring semester, and will now meet after school on Mondays and Fridays, 3:05-4:30. So recalibrate your calendars, starting Friday 3 February. Spring CSCA Fundraising from Liz Wolk The CSCA is kicking off its spring event, the WareHouse Party and we need folks to help with the planning. The WareHouse Party is an evening when the adult Center community can get together and celebrate The Center School. No tickets required and food and drink is provided. This year we will add a small silent auction to help reach our funding goal. If you are interesting in helping with this event or any fundraising, please follow the link to the following survey. And stay tuned for more information about the Warehouse Party coming this spring! Center School Enrichment Fee Thank you very much to those of you who have responded to our request for the $150 Enrichment Fee at the start of the year. We're still looking for around 40% of the families to respond. The Enrichment Fee supplements the school budget throughout the school. If you can't contribute the entire amount please pay what you can. You can pay the fee through Network for Good, or the form is available on the CSCA website. Please make your check payable to the Center School Community Association and mark 'enrichment fee' on the memo line. If you have any questions or comments about the fee you can contact Sam Star, the CSCA president at samstar500@yahoo.com. The Arts Are Basic to a Basic Education As an Arts Inclusion School, the Center School is leading the way in curriculum development, using the arts as a component of basic education while learning about the arts as a distinct and valuable element of a 'well-rounded life.' Come hear the officials talk about what we already know at a forum on arts education with Mayor Mike McGinn, Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield and a quorum of students, educators and policy people. This is a chance to speak your mind about an issue that is central to learning at the Center School, and to learn more about the district's comprehensive K-12 Visual and Performing Arts Plan. The event, on Thursday 16 February, 6:30-8:30, at Seattle University, Pigott Auditorium. For more information on the partnership between the city and the school district, look here -- for details on the forum, look there. When You're Here, You're Really Here The district is clarifying their attendance policy, particularly the distinction between an excused absence and an unexcused one -- if you've got something coming up where your student will need to miss school, take a look here and make sure you're on the right side of the regulations. Orpheus on a Budget The Center School's Ad Hoc Opera Group will not be making a formal appearance at the dress rehearsal for the upcoming production of Orpheus and Euridice, since it's in the middle of Midwinter Break, but wanted to remind us all that a Teen Tix pass will get a student into a performance for only $5. And on Sundays, they can take a parent along for another $5 -- students, think of the leverage that kind of access might bring. Thanks from the Dairy Case And finally, many thanks to the Center School staff and faculty, who donated the refrigerator from their lounge to replace the extinct fridge in the commons -- all consumers of yogurt and cheese are grateful! Do you have an idea for a BLAST article? We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week. Things we like to know: - School News, in and out of the building - Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc) - Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school. - And the ever-favorite "misc." By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run. To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net.
