12 October 2011 Happy anniversary of the Columbus Day storm of 1962. Really. From HistoryLink: "Guests at the Century 21 World's Fair were evacuated at 9:15 p.m. as a precaution. The Food Circus was kept open all night to shelter fair goers who preferred to stay indoors." And you know where the Food Circus was. Comments, questions, etc? Just ask... sandi kurtz submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net sandik@drizzle.com 206-523-6553 And More... Not Just a Tasty Side Dish Ms Britsova is asking for donations of ramen noodles for the Dragon Dollars program, to reward desirable behaviors at the Center School. So keep your eyes open for the sales inserts in the paper, and add them to the shopping list. Talking About Writing 826 Seattle (8414 Greenwood Ave. N.), the center for all kinds of writing practice, is looking for a group of parents with opinions and questions to participate in their new Parent Advisory Group. "The purpose of PAG is to give our parents a forum to discuss their concerns about their children's education and how 826 Seattle can help." To that end, 826 is inviting a series of speakers to jumpstart the discussion -- the first meeting is Tuesday 18 October, 6 - 7:30 pm, and the guest will be Sumiko Huff, currently the Academic Director at Rainier Scholars. She was a principal at Hawthorne Elementary and has extensive experience with teaching and school community outreach. The meeting is a potluck, so be ready to share your food as well as your opinions. Please RSVP to Jamal Hussein jamal@826seattle.org or 206-725-2625. Whatever Happened to Naptime? The Roosevelt High School Science Boosters have invited Horacio de la Iglesia, a sleep researcher at the UW, to give the first talk in their Science in Society lecture series, on "Why Teenagers Stay Up Late." Oddly enough, the answer is not "to irritate their parents." Come find out the actual reasons on Thursday, 20 October, 7:30 pm at the Roosevelt High School Library (1410 NE 66th St). Photo Finish The Friends of Yuen Lui Guild is sponsoring a photo contest open to Seattle area high school photographers in grades 9-12. Up to 25 photographers will have their work professionally printed and exhibited at Vermillion Gallery, and the top prize includes a photographer's pass to the Luly Yang spring fashion show. There is a entry fee of $25, with proceeds supporting Seattle Children's Hospital. Entries due Friday 21 October -- for more information check Friends of Yuen Lui Who Do You Love? 826 Seattle is starting up autumn edition of their monthly writing workshops, and the theme for high school students is indeed all about love. "Love, Pterodactyls, and Jerky & Stars" will run November - February, days to be determined, and will examine how we talk about the things we love, using metaphor, lyrical essays, and literary and other artistic expressions. For more information, contact Alex Bleecker at alexb@826seattle.org. Do you have an idea for a BLAST article? We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week. Things we like to know: - School News, in and out of the building - Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc) - Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school. - And the ever-favorite "misc." By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run. To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to submitarticle@csca.thecenterschool.net.
