DISTRICT NEWS Proposed Attendance Area Maps Announced Under the New Student Assignment Plan, a student will receive an initial assignment to an attendance area school based on home address. Students can also choose to apply to other schools. The new plan will be implemented in phases, beginning in the 2010-11 school year. Students currently enrolled at a school outside their attendance area can stay at that school through its highest grade under a process called "grandfathering"- as long as the services the students need are available at that school.
The proposed attendance area boundary maps for all elementary, middle, and high schools are available on our Proposed Student Assignment Boundary Maps Web page. Families will be able to check their proposed attendance area schools online, based on their address using a web-based address lookup tool. Updated information about each school is provided in a School Snapshot that can be accessed online by selecting a school from the drop down menu available here.
Additional information about the New Student Assignment plan and answers to frequently asked questions are also available on our New Student Assignment Web page. Brochures with the proposed maps will be sent home to all Seattle Public Schools families and are widely available now at community locations.
Release of the proposed maps kicks off an extensive schedule of community meetings designed to gather public input about the proposed boundaries. The first two meetings will take place on Saturday, October 10 at Eckstein Middle School (10 a.m. - Noon) and at Washington Middle School (2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.). A complete list of community meetings is available here. Interpretive services will be available at all meetings. You can also provide input via an online survey or by email.

IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN News re Sasha Dickinson To all happy campers at Seattle Center. Sasha has given his permission for me to wish all past classmates and the teachers he loved so much, well and success this year. He has transferred to Rainier Beach HS and is enjoying his new environment. One reason for his desire to transfer is the large Somali and Islamic population. The school allows prayer times. OneWorldNow will begin an Arabic language class next this week and Sasha will be a teacher's assistant, mentoring those wishing to study the language. There are over 100 students of Arabic in the Seattle School system and it might not be too late to sign up. He hopes to travel with the program to the Middle East perhaps Syria. Sasha continues his personal Arabic studies and has nearly completed a two-year college degree. He also continues his love of music while he attempts to learn the most difficult piano compositions. He plans that several will take more then a year to learn. You can visit some of his music at http://apojigo.com/sashad. I hope to put some more up soon. Sasha was given a Star Class racing sail boat this summer and has enjoyed its speed and responsiveness. He did well in a regatta in Olympia. Don't call until next spring for a sail as we are taking it out this week. His summer was busy with summer school and teaching sailing. Feel free to contact Sasha, keep in touch with the email he has given me permission to share lnowtv@gmail.com or sasha@worldperc.com - John 'dad' Dickinson PS Oh, we didn't go to BurningMan this summer, but have a large scale plan for 2010. and here is a gift for you: http://worldperc.com/lnowtv/#-2 make sure its on channel #-2 for a 2 hour movie.
