THIS WEEK AT CENTER SCHOOL

CSCA General Board Meeting

Thursday, October 22 - 6:30 pm

The Center School

Gather and celebrate the start of a new year at TCS. Find out all of the things the CSCA is working on to give our students and staff all the support and opportunities they deserve.  Our featured speaker for the evening will be TCS Principal Lisa Escobar. Principal Escobar will share TCS goals for the year and the ways parents can support the new positive behavior support system otherwise known as THE FOUR MANTRAS. Questions about how curriculum alignment and the new student assignment plan will affect The Center School?  Bring them to the CSCA general meeting on the 22nd.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

Dragonwear!

It’s what all Dragons want to wear!

The CSCA is sponsoring the Senior Class sale of “DRAGONWEAR”.

Our own Gracie Peterson, class of 2010, won the senior class contest for art that best personifies The Center School.  Her art will adorn sweatshirts, t-shirts and scarves!

The sale of “DRAGONWEAR” will help the senior class pay for senior events.  Hopefully every year the new senior class will be able to raise money by selling their own specially designed “DRAGONWEAR”.

The final art is being completed right now and will go into production VERY SOON.

Watch for a special BLAST - featuring the design, clothing options and order form.  Get ready to ‘get your Dragon on!’

Be in on the start of a new Center School tradition!

VOLUNTEER AT TCS

Senior Events Needs You!

The Senior Event Coordinator seeks individuals to help support Senior Events for the Class of 2010.  Join us at Senior Brunch, Senior-Junior Prom, Senior Celebration, Graduation, Graduation Reception and Grad Night.  In the past, a junior parent has shadowed the Senior Event Coordinator to learn the ropes for the following year.  Junior parents and students support and volunteer for Graduation and Graduation Reception, leaving senior parents free to enjoy the festivities.  They also build good karma for their own senior year.

I have been doing this for two years now and it really is a lot of fun!  If you are interested please contact Laura Burns at lbsupler@comcast.net  or 206-935-6229.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

SSIA Collaborative Community Meetings to Discuss Old Hay School

Wednesday, October 21 - 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Coe Elementary Cafeteria, 2424 7th Ave. W.

Thursday, October 29 - 6:30 to 8:00 pm

Catharine Blaine Elementary Library, 2550 34th Ave. W.

Successful Schools in Action will host two Collaborative Community Meetings to discuss Old Hay K-5 program options and a new name for the school.

With the recently released assignment plan and proposed attendance boundaries, the School District has announced the reopening of several schools, including the Old Hay school located on Boston Street, the location until this year of the SBOC.

This school will be renovated and reopened in 2011 as an Options School to help ease the overcrowding in our neighborhood schools. For the 2010-2011 school year, students will be bused and the program will be located in Lincoln High School.

Options schools typically offer unique programs and are all-city draws, with attendance preference given to a small, local geographic area. The District has proposed this school become a Montessori K-5 school, but they are asking for our feedback.

Please invite your friends and neighbors to attend. This is our opportunity to work together and provide input to the district on our newest neighborhood school. Hope to see you there!

Please go to www.scare.com to see their volunteer website and to check out pictures from the last several years.  Training starts the second week of October, but you can get involved now by helping the build.  See you all at the Haunt!

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

FREE SEMINAR:  How to Write “Dance”

Saturday, October 24 - 2:00 to 4:00 pm

Pacific Northwest Ballet

301 Mercer Street (Seattle Center)

Attention high school and college students!  This free seminar for aspiring young journalists, arts critics, dance writers, and reviewers is offered by the Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB).

PNB is presenting “How to Write ‘Dance’” seminar for both the aspiring arts critic who doesn’t know a perfect plié from a pair of pliers AND the dance student who can grand jeté like a grasshopper but trips over a typewriter.  This entertaining and decidedly non-scholarly panel discussion will encourage both wannabe writers and budding ballerinas to overcome their fear of the pen (or keypad).  All attendees will receive complimentary tickets to attend PNB’s upcoming DIRECTOR’S CHOICE program (and will be encouraged to write about it afterwards).

Seating is limited for this free seminar.  To reserve a space, please e-mail gtucker@pnb.org or phone 206-441-2426.
