Night Out at the Seattle Rep for TCS Community Thursday, January 14 – 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm See attached ticket order form TCS students, family, and friends will have a wonderful opportunity to see the full dress rehearsal -- the night before opening -- of the Seattle Rep's production of "Speech and Debate." Directed by Andrea Allen (who works with TCS kids) and written by young playwright Stephen Karam, "Speech and Debate" is a completely modern, hilarious and heartbreaking look at the struggles of being a teen today. Tackling issues of politics, homosexuality, and self-expression, "Speech and Debate" is recommended for ages 14 and above, and is sure to trigger lively discussion among audience members.
This special evening for TCS community will start with hearty finger foods (pot-luck) and no-host bar at 6:00 p.m., followed by a short introduction to the play by Andrea Allen before the 7:30 curtain. The play runs for 90 minutes with no intermission.

Needed: Donations for TCS Science TCS Science Department needs 35 solar powered simple calculators. The TI-108 might be a good choice, but we aren’t picky. The calculators we desire need only to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Solar is nice so that we won’t have to replace dead batteries. But if any parent has a source of cheap non-solar calculators – that would be fine too. The bottom line is that many students don’t have calculators and we only have about four to share. We will be doing math related work all year and it is really slowing us down when students have to share calculators and while cell phones do have calculators, we would prefer not to go that route, since it usually leads to texting.
Also wanted: An engraver to label equipment. Maybe someone has one lying around?
Thanks! -Britta Culbertson

DISTRICT NEWS School Levies Tuesday, February 9 At Seattle Public Schools, we are committed to providing an excellent education for every student and to ensuring that every school is an excellent school. On Tuesday, February 9, Seattle residents will have an opportunity to vote on two school levies. These levies play a critical role in our ability to meet our goals to raise student achievement as outlined in our strategic plan, Excellence for All. Both measures will replace existing levies, are part of Seattle Public Schools' long-term levy plan and will result in tax rates at current levels. The Operations Levy accounts for nearly one-quarter of the District's annual operating budget. The Capital Levy is part of Seattle Public Schools' long-range plan to upgrade and renovate aging school facilities on a planned and predictable timetable. For more information, visit our Levies 2010 Web site. Please remember to vote by mailing in your ballot by February 9.
School Open Houses Open houses will be hosted at every school in the next several weeks. The open house schedule is available here. The goal of these open houses is to offer families evening or weekend opportunities to learn more about our schools. School visits will also be scheduled beginning in mid-February, with more details to come soon. The purpose of school visits is to give families the chance to learn about the school's instructional environment during the school day. Students entering kindergarten and Grades 6 and 9 in fall 2010 will be assigned to their attendance area schools and receive their assignments in late February. Families may choose to apply during Open Enrollment (March 1-31, 2010) to attend another attendance area school or an option school. Students currently enrolled may remain at their current school through the highest grade as long as the services they need are available at the school.

SERVICE LEARNING Remember! TCS students are required to complete 60 hours of community service before graduation. It's never too early to start! Debate Tournament Seeks Volunteer Judges Saturday, January 16 - 8:30 am to 11:30 am John Hay Elementary on Queen Anne My name is Sandy Nielsen, and I am the Debate Program Manager for Successful Schools in Action. We are seeking volunteer judges for our tournament in January. We will need 10 or 11 volunteer debate judges, since over 40 4th & 5th grade kids are participating in Debate Club this fall! In the tournament, teams of 4th & 5th graders will compete with other teams, all of them from Coe, Hay, Blaine, or Lawton. Each judge evaluates only two teams in each of two rounds, with only family members of the team members observing. We recruit judges from the parents of the debate participants as well as community and university members. Orientation materials are sent via email and there is a 1/2 hour training session for judges prior to the start time of the tournament. Judges can be High School students or grown-ups, and the time qualifies for service hours. Contact me at sandynielsen@schoolsinaction.org with any questions. Sincerely, Sandy Nielsen
