UPCOMING

QSR Presentation Evening

Wednesday, May 19 -  6:30 to 8:00 pm

Conference Room A

The entire Center School community is invited to share in an evening of science, light refreshments, and fabulous Chemistry students!  Please come and enjoy talking to and hearing from students as they complete their culminating scientific research investigation.  Projects range from the effect of dehydration on cognitive ability to different types of fats in making soap to the ozonation of water as a means of purifying.  It’s a drop-in format where you can engage in conversation with students about their projects, look at the great posters they’ve put together to convey their projects in an aesthetically pleasing way, and enjoy light snacks/dessert with people from throughout the Center School community.  You also will vote for the best project in a variety of categories.  Parents of Chemistry students, be looking in the mail for your personal invitation.  Students in 9th and 10th grade (and their parents!) are also encouraged to attend since this is an endeavor they will undertake in the future.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me at rlzupke@seattleschools.org.  Thanks!

Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences
Wednesday, May 19 - 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Thursday, May 20 - 2:30 pm to 7:00 pm
One of the key predictors of student success is parent involvement in their children’s academic lives.  Earlier this year, many of you attended Student-Led Conferences, which allowed you to get a peek into your student’s school achievement.  The feedback faculty received was very positive, with parents excited about hearing their high schoolers identify both their successes and their struggles.  The most common suggestion parents had for improving the conferences was adding teacher input.
With that suggestion in mind, we invite you to Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences this May.  At these meetings, students again will share their strengths and areas of improvement.  This time, however, all teachers will be present in the conference rooms.  If you would like to get input from an individual teacher, please feel free to call that teacher over to be part of the conversation.

Conferences will be held on Wednesday, May 19th, from 2:30-5:30, and on Thursday, May 20th, from 2:30-7:00.  Feel free to drop by at the time most convenient to you and your student.  We look forward to seeing you all there!

The students choose an interesting theme of a Post Apocalyptic Prom!  What are Post Apocalyptic Prom Art and Decorations?  They are creative art installations of recycled materials: plastic bottle streamers, graffiti art, rebar trees, old technology rubble, and bicycle parts.  From these materials, the earth will be taking over, regrowing ivy, strange colorful flowers blooming, and shining arrays of light.  Students in their formal wear will be dancing among the remnants of a post industrial earth celebrating the possibilities of new creation, and the end of the school year!

Volunteers, students and parents, are needed to help create, install, and take down Prom decorations.  We will have a workshop at the Hummel House in West Seattle on Sunday, May 16th from 12:00 to 4:00pm to begin creating decorations.

Food Donations Needed for QSR Presentation Evening

Wednesday, May 19

Let’s face it, food makes everything more fun!  I’m looking for parents to donate things like veggie trays, fruit platters, cookies, brownies, munchies, drinks, etc for the upcoming QSR Presentation Evening (see the announcement right here in the BLAST!).  You don’t have to be a parent of a Chemistry student to donate.  This is an all-Center School event and students from every grade and their parents are encouraged to attend.  If you are able to donate something, please email me at rlzupke@seattleschools.org.  Thanks!

- Rachel Zupke

We have a weekly raffle as part of this program and we could use some donations for the raffle: kitschy items, small toiletries or cosmetics, school supplies, etc.
