Watch Out, They’re Behind the Wheel

from Larry Temple, Seattle Public Schools Traffic Education

Traffic Education Program is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:10 - 5:10 in Room 353 with Mr. Tannhauser (same teacher as last spring).  There are 15 class sessions (each two hours) and 6 drive lessons (one hour behind the wheel and one hour of observation if paired with another student.)  Drives may be scheduled either after class or opposite days from class.  We may have some weekend drive options available, too. This is a convenient way to take the course at your own school.  Course ends on April 26.  There is no program during Spring Break or any other Seattle School District holiday.  Registration and Day #1 = Tuesday, March 1st.  Cost of Course = $559.00

Upon payment of fee (due first day), students will receive a Dept. of Licensing waiver form to obtain a permit without needing to pass a written test at that time.  We will provide directions on where to find a DOL office and what documentation to take. The permit is good for one year.  Students under age 18 receive an intermediate license with some limitations to maximize their safety.  Those under age 18 must wait 6 months from issuance of their permit to be eligible to receive a driver license.  They will need to pass both a written and drive test to get their license.  They are not allowed to have any passengers in the car while they drive under the age of 20, except immediate members of their family during the first six months.  If they receive no traffic citations and have no collisions, then they will be allowed to have no more than 3 under age people at a time in the car for the next six months.  Students with a clean driving record after one year with their intermediate license, will have all restrictions removed and their license status will be like anyone age 18 or older.

If you (or your student) is interested, have them put their name on the list at the front desk – actual registration happens at the first class.  And for more information, contact Mr. Temple at 206-252-4735.

Rock School @ The Vera Project

Rock School has found a venue near Center School to host a weekly Rock Band class geared toward Center School students.  Rock Band 101 will start at The Vera Project on Thursday, March 3rd from 3:15 to 5:15 pm.  Each band, featuring guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard, will be overseen by a musical mentor and work collaboratively to write, create, and perform original music.  The goal is to bring the students to a level in which they can perform at a Rock School showcase and record music in Rock School’s studio.  Students will need to bring their guitars, basses, cords, picks and drum sticks.  Thursdays beginning in March from 3:15 to 5:15 pm for $75 a month.  Rock Band runs programs at other Seattle area high schools.  Contact Wendy at 425-936-2303 or wendy@rock-school.org.

Spring Scholarship Bulletin

From Barbara Quintana, Center School’s College/Career Center Specialist

Scholarship Scams!  Parents/Guardians and Students; Beware!

It is the scholarship season, there are thousands of dollars worth of scholarships out there and it is true, many thousands do go unused!

But please know there are also lots of scams to fall into; never pay for listings of scholarships that you can get easily on your own!  Never give out your credit card information to any companies that send you letters or e-mails claiming to assist your son, daughter or grandchild (etc) with scholarship information that’s geared “just for them”.

Follow the link at the end of this message to a list of FREE Scholarship Search Engines that your daughter or son can use.  Feel free to try it yourself.  After a series of questions such as; career interests, hobbies, religion, (these are secure search engines) college size, private vs. public colleges, parent’s professional association affiliations, union affiliations (many have scholarship funds as well) and a few more questions, your student will have a list of her/his own possible scholarships that they can apply for, it’s that simple!

Some places are asking for $1000.00 or more for this “service” and you can do it for free!

Please know that I will be happy to help your senior with their scholarship applications as well as all of their post high school plans, there is something for everyone and high school alone just won’t do it!  --    Barbara Quintana, Center School’s College/Career Center Specialist, Thursdays

Free Ice Skating

Since they have to make all that ice anyway, for the Smuckers Ice Show, why not let everyone have a chance at it?  Key Arena is offering free skating on March 1, with open sessions 3-5:30 pm and 6-8 pm.  Skates are available, and the whole thing is first come, first served.
