7-13 March 2011
For those of you who see this on Sunday nights, heads-up on a chilly Monday - the Center House boiler will be off for some inspections until the middle of the afternoon, so it’s Take Your Sweater To School Day. For those of you that don’t see this until sometime on Monday, we’re trying to arrange for some hot chocolate.

This Week at the Center School
This is a Test... Early warning on the HSPE (High School Proficiency Exam), which is scheduled for March 15-17, 22. You may have received a robo-call from Ms Britsova over the weekend, asking for donations of dictionaries and thesauruses (thesauri? What is the plural of thesaurus?) – if you have one you can give or lend, send it into school with your student so they can get a head start on practicing looking stuff up in an actual reference book – pace Wikipedia.
Outside the Center School
Volunteer Hour Reporting from Nancy Hom If you’ve done something for the Center School, from working an event to making phone calls, you can email your volunteer hours to skallywag@comcast.net. That kind of information is part of most grant applications, so help us gather the raw materials of statistics.

CSCA – Help Plan Next Year from Paul Dieter, board president We have another CSCA meeting coming up on March 16th. We hope everyone can attend as we have some exciting events to plan as we finish out the year, and a significant challenge as the school's budget has now been laid out and our help is needed more than ever. This is the time when we also start looking towards next year and anyone contemplating a role in CSCA in 2011/12 is encouraged to join in the planning. The current roster of CSCA leadership is heavily staffed with parents of Juniors and they will be stepping back next year to engage in all the activities parents of college bound students have come to anticipate. We have two house parties planned in May and big plans for helping position Arts Showcase as the flagship TCS event it deserves to be. Come to the meetings and join the fun. Any other agenda items can be emailed to csca@me.com. March 16th Home of Margaret Chodos-Irvine 6:00 Social Gathering (can be a great time to chat with Oksana) 6:30 - 8:30 Meeting 3018 45th Ave. S.W. Beyond High School
Girls in Technology IGNITE (Inspiring Girls Now In Technology Evolution) is planning an event at The Center School! On Thursday, March l0, a panel of women who have careers in technology are coming to Center School. There are way fewer females in technology than males and the purpose of IGNITE is to inspire and inform high school girls so that they too can hold these high paying jobs! As one panelist recently said “ this means that most of the software for games and for business applications are designed by men and is this truly what we want? The industry needs you, it needs to represent women as well!” Last year the panelists came from companies such as Boeing, Microsoft and two engineering firms. We had a graphic designer, a lawyer, two software engineers and a software tester. Each panelist shared their personal stories about how they got into their careers and what exactly they do. They encourage the girls to go to college and follow their dreams whether it’s in technology or something else. At the end, they are invited to go on a field trip to Microsoft’s Home of the Future and see technology that’s currently being developed! This field trip is coming up on Thursday March 31 and it’s on a first come, first served basis. We will have at least 20 spaces as we will be sharing the bus with Garfield girls. Everyone has a fabulous time and are treated to lunch as well. Ms. Quintana will start to publicize these two events on March 3rd. Girls can sign-up at the school office, they also need to pick up a special ticket (pass) when they sign-up. It’s a fantastic way to find out about great opportunities and hear from women in the field. Barbara Quintana, College/Career Center Specialist
