Tweaking the Schedule

Homework Club, which used to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, moved to Mondays and Fridays at the beginning of the semester, and is now splitting the difference -- meeting on Mondays and Thursdays.

Seniors - Deadlines Approaching

Seniors need to have completed their PE and service learning hours by 2 April, so use the midwinter break to make sure you've got what you need, and then write it all up.

Student Enrichment Fee

from the CSCA board

Over the last couple of weeks, a number of Center School parents have called other parents reminding them about the Student Enrichment Fee. The suggested voluntary contribution is $150 per student. This is money that the Center School Community Association, the school's PTA, raises to supplement the School District budget. We distribute the money amongst all of the teachers, and to all of the classes. We purchase supplies that benefit all of the students. We realize that not every family can afford the full $150 contribution. The students will benefit from whatever amount you can contribute before the end of the school year. Please make your check payable to Center School Communication Association, and make a note that this is for your student's enrichment fee. The check can be dropped off at the front desk at the school. If you have any questions and/or comments about the fee, please contact Sam Star, Center School Community Association president at 206-789-3483, or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Artists as Collectors

The Wright family has been running a low-key exhibit space, mostly to show work from their own, extensive collection, but their new show opens up the idea of collecting to art makers themselves, asking a group of artists to curate collections of their own. The results are supposed to run the gamut, from found materials and art objects to consumer products. The space is only open a few hours a week, Thursdays and Saturdays 10 am - 2 pm, but the show is free, so midwinter break is a great time to stop in and look. 407 Dexter Ave N, entrance around back, call for directions if confused 206-263-8200.

Grammy Camp

The local chapter of the Recording Academy (that brings us the Grammys every year) is running a day-long workshop Friday 6 April on the music industry, with hands-on sessions by performers, producers, engineers and other music professionals. If you're heading in that direction after high school, or just curious about what it entails, check their website for an application, or contact Caroline Dodge at 206-834-100, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more details. Applications are due 27 February, so you could work on it over the break.

"The goal of the program is to enhance students' strengths in math problem solving to better prepare them for the rigorous college-level mathematics coursework required of top engineering schools like the University of Washington's College of Engineering." If your student is thinking about pursuing engineering or a related career, take a look at this program. Applications are due March 15, so look now at

PTA Money for College

The Washington State PTA is awarding scholarships to graduates of Washington State public high schools beginning their freshman year of post-secondary education in the United States. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, academic performance, or leadership/community service. The application form is available on the Washington State PTA website. This application form is the only form that will be accepted. Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2012. Recipients will be notified by May 1, 2012. $2,000 Grants will be awarded to recipients entering four-year post-secondary institutions, and $1,000 grants will be awarded to recipients entering community college, vocational-technical schools or other accredited institutions.

Do you have an idea for a BLAST article?

We want to know what you know, and we want to know what you need. Send us your specific content, or your ideas for content. If you have Blast content to get out this week - please submit it by Friday at 3 pm. The Blast goes out late Sunday night, and covers school life for the following week.

Things we like to know:

- School News, in and out of the building

- Opportunities for Center School students (volunteering, classes, performances, etc)

- Student, staff and faculty accomplishments beyond the school.

- And the ever-favorite "misc."

By now you've seen the motley collection of stuff that qualifies for the Blast -- if you've got something that fits that very elastic category, send it in. Make sure you tell me what's going on, where and when it's happening, and how to get in touch with the people involved, if participation is the goal. And let me know how long you think it should run.

To submit news, events, or calendar items to be included in the Blast, send an email with subject line "News" to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Dragon Wear!

from Amalie Dieter
Everyone is welcome to order Dragon Wear (no, it’s not just for seniors), your entire family can order Dragon Wear if they want. Order forms are at the front desk or can be downloaded here, and are due by February 17th. This year’s Dragon Wear logo was designed by a senior, Skye Stewart, and it will be printed in black on the front of a red T-shirt and will be printed in white on the front of a black sweatshirt. The money will help pay for graduation and graduation night. There have been announcements every morning and signs are plastered all over the school, but not many people have returned their order forms to the front desk. We are going to need a lot more participation in order to make this a worth while fundraiser, so come on and show some dragon spirit!

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

CSCA February Meeting Cancelled
from the CSCA board
The CSCA has a full plate in February; TCS Open House, several CSCA committee meetings, PTA workshops,  and an untimely scheduling conflict with Valentines Day.  Therefore, the CSCA February Meeting has been canceled.  Something had to give.  For those planning on attending the February meeting, please contact Sam Star to learn how you can volunteer for the CSCA.  Our 13 March 2012 CSCA Meeting will be held as scheduled We want to invite any and all interested parents and guardians to participate in their student's education.

Credit Where Credit Is Due
from Madalyn Corbit, Center School Volunteer Recordkeeper
Hello TCS Friend, Family and Student Volunteers,
I am completing the compilation of first semester's volunteer hours and asking you all to think back (I know, and apologize for the imposition) and recall and report any hours you might have neglected to send to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  Alumni brunch? Send 'em in! Fund raising planning? Send 'em in! MUN Planning? You know the drill!  It is of huge benefit for us to log the many, many hours that you all contribute, so if you could take a minute and shoot them over, that would be great.

Outside the Center School

Planning for an Arts Plan
The Seattle Public Schools are working with the City of Seattle and community arts organizations to create a new, comprehensive arts plan to increase the quantity and quality of arts education for all K-12 students.  Right now, they’re at the research stage, so it’s time to register your opinions.  The Center School is the closest thing that this district has to an arts high school -- please lend your expertise to the process.  First thing -- take this (very) short survey, on priorities in arts education.  Honest, it’s really short.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2012SPSArtsPlan
Next thing -- come to the Arts Education Forum, Thursday 16 February, 6:30-8:30 pm at Seattle University for a panel discussion, along with Mayor Mike McGinn and Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield.  http://www.seattle.gov/arts/education/forum.asp
And not the last thing, but the last thing for now -- come to one of the public meetings that will be held throughout the city in March to speak up about your specific ideas and needs.  (sign up for notification in the survey above)  Center School families know from experience how powerful the arts can be when they’re really a part of the classroom process, not just a sprig of parsley on the side of the plate.

PTSA Focus Day

from the Washington State PTSA
Even though the Washington Supreme Court has ruled that the Legislature needs to increase - not decrease - funding for education, it's still important to remind legislators that K-12 education and kids matter; our annual Focus Day does just that.  The day will be informative and entertaining for children and adults.  Join the Parade and Noon Rally on the steps of the Capital at Focus Day, Monday 20 February, 8:30 am - 2 pm, Olympia, WA. The day starts at 9:00am at the Urban Onion (across from Sylvester Park), with opening sessions and children's activities. The parade starts at 11:35, with the rally at noon on the Capital steps. Focus Day is free but please register to help with planning and materials. The agenda and registration form are available on the WSPTA website. You can also pre-order and purchase lunch for pick-up at the Urban Onion (360) 943-9242.  Contact your legislators to make appointments. Save the date! Sign-up and show-up on February 20 to speak out for kids!
http://www.wastatepta.org/meetings/focus_day/index.html

The Wheels on the Bus Go On a Different Route
Most Center School students depend on Metro busses to get back and forth to school, so the route changes that the city is planning to implement beginning next September will have a big impact on our student body.  Check the Metro website for an explanation about the changes, and a plethora of route maps, including the new Rapid Ride C and D lines from Ballard and West Seattle.  And if you’ve got something to say about the changes, make sure you take the survey.
http://metro.kingcounty.gov/have-a-say/projects/restructuring-system.html

They Represent Us

State legislators are in the middle of their Olympia sessions, but are taking time our in the next couple of weeks to hold town hall meetings across the state -- take a moment to find out when your representatives are meeting, and bring your concerns, including K-12 education, to the table.
http://www.educationvoters.org/2012/02/07/legislative-town-hall/

Pain-free Writing Workshops
The denizens of 826 Seattle have devised several great writing workshops for teens who might balk at the usual essay assignments.  Check here for their spring schedule, which includes “I’ve Made Up My Mind! Now Try to Change It…,” a workshop on persuasive writing, and sessions on making found poetry using everything from newspaper articles to sticky note messages.
http://www.826seattle.org/programs/workshops/

Beyond High School

SAT Preparation

from Karen Harmon, Center School Counselor
If your student will be taking the SAT, or other college-bound exams, soon, you might want to take a look at this article from the Seattle Times.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/education/2003976523_collwebsatprep.html

Last, But Not Least

I know that the current thing in arts marketing is the total package.  It's not enough to have a great dance on stage or a fabulous painting on the wall -- you have to surround it with other elements to make an "experience" for the potential audience.  But when the cafe at the art museum has to make a special menu to coordinate with their Gauguin & Polynesia show, I'm not sure I'm really looking forward to house-made spam.

"Executive Chef Craig and the entire culinary team have been working overtime to create French and Polynesian menu items inspired by Gauguin & Polynesia. Guests dining with us can enjoy crispy chicken salad with fried taro root, albacore póke, and homemade spam."

“I’d Like To Thank The Academy”

The Academy Awards are coming up at the end of the month, so here’s a little example, from another awards program, of how to say “thank you” should your name be called.  Neil Gaiman, Outstanding Scriptwriting for Doctor Who's "The Doctor's Wife."

Center School Girls Invited to Tour Microsoft!

It's time once again for the fourth year that IGNITE (Inspiring Girls Now In Technology Evolution) has invited Center School girls to visit Home of the Future and The Envisioning Center at Microsoft in Redmond.

On February 16th girls will choose to see either of the two tours and will be amazed at the new technology this will be coming out in the near future. Ms. Quintana in the school's College/Career Office will be able to take the first 20 females to Redmond via school bus. Girls will meet several women in high tech and they plan on sharing career information with them including how they got into this mainly male held field. They tell us that 80% of of the high tech industry jobs are held by men, this is why IGNITE was started, to help females understand about other future career possibilities, and for fun! They will also be treated to lunch and encouraged to continue their education no matter what field they choose.

And More

Congratulations to Us!
The Center School won top honors from the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, receiving their Washington Achievement Award in both Overall Excellence and Special Recognition - Improvment. The recognition is based on the Achievement Index, "a comprehensive measurement of Washington schools' performance over time." For more information on the award, check the OSPI website.

Sound Off Semifinals
Don't forget to come out this Saturday 11 February, 8 pm, to support the Unibroz (packed with current and former Center School denizens) and their appearance at the Experience Music Project's battle of the bands, Sound Off. Check here for more details.

Senior Service Project
Seniors need to keep collecting pledges for their upcoming habitat restoration project on 31 March at a Duwamish River park. Organizer Paul Dieter has asked for some parent participation in this as well -- if you've got some time you could give for organization or supervision, please contact him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Looking to Make Some Music?
The Soundboard is a place to get information on all-ages events and gigs in the Northwest.

An Entertainment Dilemma
This coming weekend, not only is the Varsity Theater showing their Oscar Nominated Shorts programs (one for live-action and one for animation), but the Seattle International Film Festival starts their Looney Tunes Fest -- a weekend full of Bugs Bunny, Marvin the Martian, Yosemite Sam -- you get the picture. How can we choose between them?

Coming Attractions and Past Accomplishments

CSCA February Meeting Deferred in Favor of Romance
Any other month (well, any month during the school year) the faithful members of the CSCA would be meeting on the second Tuesday, toiling away at projects to improve the life of the Center School, but this month that happens to be Valentine's Day, and so the fearless leaders of the group have decided to cancel the meeting, in favor of staying at home with their loved ones (not to mention a heart-shaped box of chocolaty treats.)

Finding More Room For Students
The school board has looked at the Magic 8 Ball (and read the professional reports) and is trying to prepare for a big jump in enrollment, starting with the 2012-13 school year. Their new plan includes reopening some schools, redrawing some assignment boundaries and re-instituting the use of portable classrooms at various schools. For a look at their full report, check here, and to double check your own assignment area, use their look-up tool here.

PTSA "Nuts and Bolts"
The next general meeting of the PTSA Seattle Council is scheduled for Monday 13 February, 6:30-8:30 at the John Stanford Center (2445 3rd Ave. S), and will cover the fundamentals of school allocation, plus an update on the state budget woes (and how they will affect Seattle schools). SCPTSA Board member Andrea Baumgarten will facilitate this discussion. School Board President, Michael DeBell, Sherry Carr, School Board Chair for Audit and Finance, and Cathy Thompson, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, will be at the meeting to answer questions from all comers, including you.

After the Thaw
We've already seen the last of the snow on the ground, but the Seattle Public Schools are still negotiating about the aftermath. Our students made up one of the "snow days" on 27 January, but the district is petitioning the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to waive the other two days. If they say yes, the rest of the school year continues as scheduled -- if not, freshmen through juniors will have to add two days to the end of the school year. Seniors, who already graduate earlier than the scheduled end of the term, are not affected.

Solidarity Forever?
The Museum of History and Industry sponsors a monthly "History Cafe," exploring various topics -- this month the guest speaker is Conor Casey, the main archivist from the Labor Archives of Washington State, talking about local labor history Thursday 16 February, 7 pm, at Roy Street Tea and Coffee (700 Broadway Ave. E). For more information, check their website.

Beyond High School

Register for the SAT
Register by 10 February for the test on 10 March. For information or online registration, check their website.  And a hint for test-takers -- you may be asked to copy over a statement using cursive writing.  Don't fret, but ask your parents to show you how to make a lower case "f" and an upper case "G" and "Q."  But don't laugh at them when they show you -- they're not trying to be funny.

Last, But Not Least

Sometimes something needs a lot of explanation. And sometimes it doesn't. "The Son of Cooking with 7-Up." Need I say more? I didn't think so.
